Sonya recently took time out of her hectic schedule to share her decorating tips.
There is a lot to consider when choosing tiles, such as the location you’re working with (indoor or outdoors), the size of your space (confined or expansive), the look you’re trying to create (classic, contemporary or exotic, for example), and colour combining.
When used indoors, the size of the tile’s design should balance with the size of the room or space where the tiles will be laid. A large design can look out of balance in small areas, so I tend to use these in large rooms or expansive outdoor spaces.
Intricately patterned or boldly coloured tiles in a large area can look very dramatic – and very busy if this is the look you are after. Soft pale colours or simplistic designs create the opposite effect.
The European, Middle Eastern and Cuban tiles I source and supply have been around for centuries and have become incredibly popular in Australia over the last few years. Jatana's antique range comes with all the imperfections that you would expect from tiles that can be over 100 years old. There are also limited quantities available in these designs and once they are gone they are irreplaceable.

When choosing tiles for the kitchen, I recommend you either use feature tiles on a splash back, on the face of a kitchen island, as the flooring, or as a solo feature wall. The kitchen is usually the place where there is a lot going on so it’s best to choose a tile colour and pattern that provides some balance. Put simply, small designs best suit small splashbacks while larger designs work better on the floor.
When it comes to renovating your kitchen, don’t overdue it! An easy, affordable tip to give the space a lift is to create a small feature in an area that stands out and catches your eye. A simple strip near the cooktop or preparation areas with the right tile can create an instant wow factor.
For outdoor areas, I always suggest using vivid tiles that complement nature. For example, I chose this Flower Garden design for an outdoor shower as the green, red and mustard in the tile work beautifully as they pick up colours from the surrounding landscape. I tend to steer away from any design that has a lot of white, as this will clearly show the dirt and tannin stains from leaf litter.
