Pav’s predictions

Matthew PavlichHi and welcome to my first e-newsletter piece for Homeloans. I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved with Homeloans for almost a year now and can openly say how much I’ve enjoyed the relationship to this point. Here’s hoping it’s a long and prosperous involvement.

The 2011 AFL pre-season has seen many headlines for unfortunately mostly the wrong reasons.  A few people within the industry need to have a good hard look at themselves and implicitly understand their role in the community. Meanwhile, some of the media also needs to re-evaluate the manner in which it goes about ‘information gathering’ and general conduct.

Nevertheless, thank goodness the home and away season is almost upon us and what an exciting year it’s shaping up to be. With the addition of the Gold Coast Suns as the 17th team in the national competition, the year is set to be one of the most enthralling and competitive yet.  With the arrival of the new franchise in south east Queensland, the off season trade period saw more player movement than the modern day bench rotation system!  Former Geelong superstar Gary Abblett was the most high profile player making the move up to the Gold Coast.  Time will tell how successful the new team will go, but with so much young talent in one place soaking up that warm weather, there’s no doubting the potential Guy McKenna has at his fingertips.

As we have seen in the NAB Cup however, Collingwood and St Kilda again seem to be the early benchmarks and will provide many teams an arduous assignment if they are not prepared early in the initial rounds. Throw in Geelong and the Western Bulldogs (last year’s other top four sides), and it just goes to show how tough it is to break into the top end of the table. With Sydney (John Longmire), Essendon (James Hird) and Geelong (Chris Scott) all having changes in their senior coaching positions, there will be a fierce desire to impress and as a consequence, there’s bound to be some red hot games in the early parts of the season.

As for Fremantle, we’ve had a somewhat tumultuous pre-season with many important players including Anthony Morabito (knee - season), Roger Hayden (foot – rd 10), Hayden Ballentyne (foot), Nat Fyfe (hip), Matt de Boer (hamstring) and Stephen Hill (leg,) all having heavily monitored summer training programs. We do look forward however to the continued improvement of all our younger players and with the addition of mature aged trades, Jonathon Griffen (Adelaide), Jack Anthony (Collingwood), Tendai Muzungu (Perth) and Peter Faulks (Williamstown), we’re confident that our further developed game plan can hold up wherever we play.

Here’s to a big season!! Go the Dockers!!
