G’day and welcome to the first of my NRL updates for Homeloans, in which hopefully I can provide some ‘interesting’ commentary from an ex-player’s point of view. Before that, though, I must say how rewarding it has been coming on board with Homeloans, and I am most impressed with the manner in which they do business and the overall ethos of the organisation. I look forward to a long and mutually rewarding association.
Well, the soap opera that is the NRL has certainly kept us enthralled and entertained since the season launched on March 12, and as we embark upon the second half of the season. I wish I could say that the entertainment had been limited to what we have seen on the paddock, but then it probably wouldn’t be our game as we know it.
On field, the Dragons, who’ve been resurrected by their coach, the great Wayne Bennett, look hell bent on adding to the grand old club’s trophy cabinet, and are clear leaders both on the ladder and in the minds of the people. They play a typical Bennett-style of footy, focusing on rock solid defence, and taking whatever comes their way when they have the football. They sure are looking the goods.
The Panthers are right on their hammer, but for me, I don’t think they can carry their form for the remainder of the season (look for a late season fade-out). South Sydney continues to improve and if they can find true consistency, they will be there when the whips are cracking. And watch for my old team the Broncos as they continue their resurgence in form.
Off field, the salary cap debate rages and, of course, the Melbourne Storm affair bubbles along. Big news also in the defection of Israel Folaou to AFL, and of course Queensland’s imminent victory in this year’s State of Origin series!!! The problems in our game (aside from NSW’s Origin form) would go a long way toward being solved with the implementation of a strong independent commission to run our game. The efficiencies to be found in such a model would be enormous from a financial point of view, but a greater benefit would come in the form of direction that it would give, channeling the hopes and wishes of all stakeholders into a better and bolder future for Rugby League.
Til next time, enjoy your footy!
